A Cool Kid’s Guide to Nerdy Things

Are you tired of your nerdy friends talking about things that you’re just not into? Do you want to feel in the know without having to actually know anything?

We’re here to help.

Doctor Who/Torchwood

A time traveling alien (Time Lord) who travels through space and time in his space ship (TARDIS), bringing along companions for funsies. Doctor Who has been on for 50 years, with 11 different actors playing the Doctor.

Speak Nerd: TARDIS, mad man with a box, weeping angels, Don’t blink!, Time Lord, Dalek, sonic screwdriver, Captain Jack, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Who’s your Doctor?, Are you my mummy?

The Guild

Originating as a web series, each season is only about 45 minutes long. Birthed from the mind of Felicia Day, The Guild follows a group of people who play a World of Warcraft-esque game, and have never met (until the first season). Even if you’re not into intense online games, this show is worth it to watch Clara, because she says the most awesomely ridiculous things.

Speak Nerd: Playing The Game, Codex, Zaboo, Vork, Clara cracks me up, Knights of Good

Walking Dead

Based on a comic book, this is a popular show that has glamorized zombies and added action and gore to a basic soap opera format, making it acceptable to menfolk.

Speak Nerd: Walkers, Darryl Dixon, Ricktatorship, I’m glad Laurie died

Flight of the Conchords

Great for music nerds, Flight of the Conchords features a two-man band from New Zealand (not Australia) as they try to make it big in New York. Each episode features an original song.

Speak Nerd: It’s Business s Time, I’m not crying, Alfie the Racist Dragon

Game of Thrones

Originating in a book too nerdy for most people to get through, as it belongs in the fantasy section of your local library, HBO made it popular by adding boobs. It follows several people as they strive for ownership of the Seven Kingdoms, for whatever reason: revenge, thinking it’s their birth right, revenge, etc.

Speak Nerd: Joffrey is a dick, direwolf, George R. R. Martin, the last dragon, Dothraki, The Imp

A brainchild of Joss Whedon, Firefly lasted one season, and Serenity was the wrap up movie that came later. In a futuristic world where only Asian and Western American cultures survived, Firefly follows the crew of the Firefly as they smuggle and try to stay afloat and under the radar of the government (the Alliance)

Speak Nerd: Shiny, Captain, I am a leaf on the wind, Alliance, Browncoats, Miranda, Reavers, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, anything in Chinese

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

Birthed during the writer’s strike, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog began as webisodes, and feature Nathan Fillion, Felicia Day, and the ever-amorous Neil Patrick Harris as characters in a world of superheroes and villains, all while singing. It’s great fun.

Speak Nerd: Bad Horse (the Thoroughbred of Sin), the Hammer is my penis, we do the weird stuff, Captain Hammer, Dr. Horrible, Bait and Switch
